I was doing a lot of hiking for awhile and looking at a lot of trail maps. Going off the trail map was always a risk and usually worth taking. Eye to eye with a huge coyote at dusk when I went in the wrong direction, a snake or two I hadn't banked on running into...getting off the map was always worth it.
